October News

What a busy month September was! Our Pre-K days were packed with fun and learning, and the days and weeks flew by. Our September theme, "God made me special" went hand-in-hand with our focus on getting acquainted with new friends, teachers, and routines in a new school full of big kids! We’ve  had gym, Spanish, music and library classes with our specials teachers, listened to lots of stories, learned new songs and prayers, visited St. Christopher Church every week, started our hot lunch program (we carry our own trays!), explored different art techniques, and played fun games. We have learned that God made each of us in unique and wonderful ways, and that He loves each one of us very much. We've practiced the name and sound associated with both upper and lowercase letters A - H, and we love doing the motions that go with each letter. We are finishing up a unit on Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and have been counting, recognizing and writing numbers, sorting and comparing by different attributes, talking about what happens when another one comes or one or more is missing (beginning addition and subtraction concepts) and doing lots of pouring, measuring, mixing, and comparing with our sand table and balance scales.

Our October theme is FALL! We are learning about farms, apples, trees, and pumpkins, and carefully observing and exploring the changes fall brings. We are excited about our field trip to Parlee Farm - please send in permission forms, vehicle forms and the required $7.00 cash no later than Thursday, October 5th so that we will be able to coordinate with drivers and with the farm. This trip is always a seasonal highlight, and the folks at Parlee are experts at creating educational trips for preschoolers.
During the weeks of October, we will introduce and practice the name and sound of letters I - P. This is a fast-paced Pre-K letter introduction program, and the children are eagerly participating each day. We will be exploring the idea that friends are are gift from God, and learning about God's gift of creation as we study fall and farms. In math, we'll continue to work on counting, sorting, and recognizing numbers, and will be working with word problems to add and subtract up to five objects. We'll be learning the traditional story The Little Red Hen, and exploring its characters, settings, and themes through books, interactive storytelling, songs and dramatizations. We'll even get to join the Kindergarten classes for a visit from firefighters who will show us some of the special equipment they use. We have a very busy month ahead of us in Pre-K!
