Kindergarten - Miss Narkis

Welcome to Kindergarten! If you have any questions or concerns, please send me in a note with your child.

I have been part of the teaching staff here at St. Chris for over 15 years and love it. I also taught for 10 years in the public school prior to coming to St. Chris. My whole career has focused on the early childhood years. I find that kindergarten is a challenging but very fun level to teach and at St. Chris I’m pleased to be able to include a spiritual component to my teaching.

Mrs. Irene Foran is the Kindergarten aide for Miss Narkis.

Class news February 2018

It's February!  Time is flying and these kinders are growing and learning at lightning speed!  We have recently begun our STEM project which centers around making an air pressured rocket.  Ultimately the whole thing will come together in the next week or so, as the groups complete their assigned roles.  We are having a blast.  Laughing

We have been spending a lot of time on the concrete and symbolic levels of basic operations in math.  We have practiced solving written math problems as well as word problems, which require a keen ear for math vocabulary words.  The children are becoming more familiar with how to read a problem and know how to find the answer.  We continue to count, record, and compare numbers on a daily basis.

Our computer classes are going quite well and the children are really enjoying going up to the lab.  Word has it that Mrs. Litch is very impressed with their technology skills especially mouse control.  We also have a Beebot in our classroom that I am using with the children.  It is a very cute, mobile robot that is in the form of a bumblebee, and it operates on a floor grid.  The Beebot can be programmed to follow a sequence of directions that will bring it to a desired location on the grid.  The children love engaging with the Beebot.

Since President's Day is this month,  I have planned a couple of cute activities that have to do with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  I also have a fantastic map activity involving the state of NH which I hope to squeeze in this month.

Orderliness is the character trait for February and even though it isn't quite Spring yet, we will be getting ourselves organized!  It is nice to clean out messy corners and put everything where it belongs.  The challenge is to be disciplined enough to keep it that way.

We will be having a Valentine's celebration on Wednesday, February 14th (also a free dress day-pink,red, and white).  Please remember to have your child sign his or her valentine cards for the class, but please do not address them with names because it will make passing them out much more efficient. Thank you! Smile

January Class News 2017

clip_january001_LIt's time for kindergarten to launch off into space to study our solar system!  This unit is truly a blast to teach, and the children are sure to enjoy exploring the different planets, as well as observing my traditional rocket launch.  Space exploration is continuous and exciting , so we will be checking in with the NASA website to connect with the latest discoveries.

In math we will continue with number work and addition and subtraction.  Many of the games that we play at our work stations require adding and subtracting skills which is a fun way to practice and strengthen these skills.

Our character trait for this month is generosity which involves giving of one's time and talents.  With the number of wonderful volunteers we have in our St. Chris family, generosity is modeled for the children on a daily basis.  We are surrounded by so many forms of generosity in our school, that it is almost impossible not to get swept up into becoming part of it.

Our reading program will be picking up the pace with these added HFW:  they you of are that do one two three four five This month's focus is on finding the main idea of a story and relating the cause and effect.  These kinders love being read to, and have become quite familiar with the elements of literary form.  I will begin daily readings of Little House in the Big Woods starting the first week in January.  I usually read through the first few books in this series because the children enjoy it so much.  We also will be doing more reading and wordwork activities as part of the daily five method.

We will begin something new this month:  COMPUTER CLASS!  On alternating Fridays, KN will be traveling upstairs to work with Mrs. Litch in the computer lab.

Just a reminder that I will be reassessing the students over the coming weeks because report cards will be going home at the end of the month.

At the very end of January, we also will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week which will include many fun activities!

December class news 2017

Jesus-birth-celebration-cute-graphicaaa December is upon us and we will begin the beautiful season of Advent, leading us toward the ultimate celebration of Christmas!  As we light each candle of the Advent wreath, we remember Jesus as the light of the world, and we mark the approaching date of His birth.  We have a gift hanging on our classroom door which will be covered with happy faces.  These happy faces represent the good deeds and acts of kindness done by the children and offered as gifts for baby Jesus's birthday.  The children have already come up with some great ideas of things that they plan to do over the course of the coming weeks.

Graphs and fractions will be covered this month along with reviewing numbers beyond ten.  We already keep a daily weather graph which serves as a visual recording for the children to use in making comparisons.  They can't wait to color in a red box which indicates a snowy day!  Over the last month we have been working on number combinations using unifix cubes.  This will be helpful later on when we cover basic operations.

Our journal writing is moving along quite nicely as we apply our high frequency words to our sentences.  The children are getting good at this and really do look forward to this activity.
