Kindergarten - Miss Narkis

Welcome to Kindergarten! If you have any questions or concerns, please send me in a note with your child.

I have been part of the teaching staff here at St. Chris for over 15 years and love it. I also taught for 10 years in the public school prior to coming to St. Chris. My whole career has focused on the early childhood years. I find that kindergarten is a challenging but very fun level to teach and at St. Chris I’m pleased to be able to include a spiritual component to my teaching.

Mrs. Irene Foran is the Kindergarten aide for Miss Narkis.

October class news 2016

287856107-autumn-clipart-05aaIt's October and we have already visited Pre-K to share our first class book with them! The children got to introduce themselves and read their own pages to everyone.  We practiced first, and the kindergarteners were so excited to read to the younger children.  It went great, and I am very proud of them.

The children have settled into the weekly routine, and they have been working very hard.  Our reading program is off to a good start, and we continue to add to our list of high frequency words.  This month we will be adding the following words:  a to   have   is

We are reviewing phonics daily and sequencing stories.  The children are becoming familiar with elements of literary form such as author, illustrator, and title.  We will practice further with identifying characters, setting, and comparing and contrasting.

This month's character trait is TRUTHFULNESS which we have been putting into practice in the classroom.  Trustworthyness is an admirable quality to posess, as most people dislike being lied to, and like to deal with honest people whom they can trust.

We have been focusing on numbers 1-10 as we warm up and move on toward 20.  We've been base counting, sequencing, comparing values and learning about odd and even numbers.

The weeks ahead will also include pumpkin and Fall related activities, as well as a visit from the NFD.  The children will get a chance to examine some of the equipment that is used by the firefighters, as well as see the different trucks up close.  We will be reviewing fire safety basics with the children in class.

Since we will have a huge map of Europe on display for a couple of weeks this month, the children will have a special opportunity to explore and learn.  We will be learning some map skills and engaging in hands on activities to become more familiar with various countries and places on the map.  This will be a nice introduction for the children since later in the year I will be doing a unit on the state of NH as well as the United States.

September Class News 2016

This month is the beginning of a new year of learning and growing.  Kindergarten is such a great time to develop skills, gain knowledge, create, socialize, increase confidence, become more independent, and have fun!  Over the next few weeks, we will be reviewing colors, letters of the alphabet, phonics and numbers 1-10.  We will also practice lowercase letters in handwriting and name writing.  As we begin the Pearson Reading Street program, we will cover comprehension, high frequency words, vocabulary, decodable stories and elements of literary form. A detailed outline of this curriculum will be handed out on information night.

To commence our religion series, we will read a book entitled, "What is God Like?"  God has some incredible attributes which we will be discussing, along with our special relationship to Him. Our religion book begins with the story of creation which will also be covered in our daily Bible story reading.  This month's character trait is attentiveness ,which is a great thing to start with because it builds a special awareness of self and others.  It also improves respect, as well as learning.  You will soon be receiving more information about this wonderful program.

Mrs. Foran and I are looking forward to a very fun and productive month ahead.  We thank you for sharing your little ones with us, and for all you've done to prepare them for school. We appreciate all your support and the supplies for classroom use.

We look forward to seeing you at information night on Monday, Sept. 12th.  It will provide you with an opportunity to check out the classroom, review our curriculum, sign up for a conference time, and sign up to volunteer to help with class parties/activities etc. Hope to see you there! Smile
