Kindergarten - Miss Narkis

Welcome to Kindergarten! If you have any questions or concerns, please send me in a note with your child.

I have been part of the teaching staff here at St. Chris for over 15 years and love it. I also taught for 10 years in the public school prior to coming to St. Chris. My whole career has focused on the early childhood years. I find that kindergarten is a challenging but very fun level to teach and at St. Chris I’m pleased to be able to include a spiritual component to my teaching.

Mrs. Irene Foran is the Kindergarten aide for Miss Narkis.

March News 2017

animated-march-clipart-1_aaHAPPY MARCH!  It is hard to believe that it will be Spring in a few weeks.  It is such a hopeful time of year that is full of life and growth.  The children have grown so much since September and I continue to enjoy watching them increase in their abilities.

The week that we return from February break will include our STEM day.  The children worked in small groups to meet an engineering objective and they all successfully accomplished the task!  They loved engaging in whatever role they each played in contributing to their group.  All four groups will have their creations on display on STEM night.  (Thurs. 3/9)

We will be learning about the season of Lent this month which begins on Ash Wednesday.  The children will participate in the Stations of the Cross each Friday afternoon during Lent.  This is a nice way for them to remember the sacrificial love of Jesus and spend some time reflecting on His precious gift of salvation.

Forgiveness is this month's character trait which is ultimately demonstrated by Jesus on the cross, at which time He asked forgiveness for those who were killing Him.  We have numerous opportunities in life to exercise forgiveness and the children are very good about showing mercy and forgiveness to each other.

We will reach the end of the alphabet this month so Zebulan zebra will be our last letter friend.  From this time forward, we will be studying weekly word families.  We will continue to work on reading and writing skills and word work activities.  The children love adding to our list of HFW and enjoy practicing them in class.

Our new unit on rocks and minerals will be lots of fun as the children will learn about the three basic categories of rocks and get their hands on some real gems!  Children seem to naturally enjoy collecting and examining rocks so they should enjoy the numerous activities I have planned for them.

I hope everyone returns to school healthy and happy and ready for a great month of learning and growing!  HAPPY SPRING! Laughing

February News 2017

geo_states_new_hampshireIt's February!  Time is flying and these kinders are growing and learning at lightning speed!  We have recently begun our STEM project which centers around the concept of sink and float.  Ultimately the groups will work together to create a means to float their sinkable treasure.  It is very exciting and the project will continue to develop over the coming weeks.

We have been spending a lot of time on the concrete and symbolic levels of basic operations in math.  We have practiced solving written math problems as well as word problems which require a keen ear for math vocabulary words.  The children are becoming more familiar with how to read a problem and know how to find the answer.  We continue to count, record and compare numbers on a daily basis.

Our computer classes are going well and the children are really enjoying going up to the lab.  We also have a Beebot for our classroom that I will be using with the children.  A Beebot is a very cute mobile robot that is in the form of a bumblebee and it operates on a floor grid.  The Beebot can be programmed to follow a sequence of directions that will bring it to a desired location on the grid.  I am so excited to use it with the children because they are going to love it!!

Since President's Day is this month, I have a couple cute activities planned that have to do with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  I also have a fantastic map activity involving the state of NH which I will try to squeeze in this month.

Orderliness is the character trait for February and even though it isn't quite Spring yet, we will be getting ourselves organized!  It is nice to clean out messy corners and put everything where it belongs. The challenge is to be disciplined enough to keep it that way.

We will be having a Valentine celebration on Tuesday, February 14th (also a free dress day - pink, white and red).  Please remeber to have your child sign his or her valentine cards for the class, but please do not address them with names because we will be handing out six hundred and twenty five of them! Thank you! Smile

January Class News 2017

Winter_snow_bear_aaIt's time for kindergarten to launch off into space to study our solar system. This unit is truly a blast to teach, and the children are sure to enjoy exploring the different planets, as well as observing my traditional rocket launch!  Space exploration is continuous and exciting, so we will be checking in with the NASA website to connect with the latest discoveries. It isn't unreasonable to think that some of these kindergarten students will one day spend their Summer vacation on Mars!

In math we need to continue practicing numbers beyond 20 and we will begin basic addition.  Many of our work station games will require adding which will be a fun way to apply this skill.

Our character trait for January is generosity which involves giving of one's time and talents.  With the number of wonderful volunteers we have in our St. Chris family, generosity is modeled for the children on a daily basis!  We are surrounded by so many forms of generosity in our school, that it is almost impossible not to get swept up into becoming part of it.

Our reading program will be picking up the pace with these added HFW:  they  you  of  are  that  do  one  two  three  four  five This month's focus is on finding the main idea of a story and relating the cause and effect.  These kinders LOVE being read to, and are quite familiar with the elements of literary form.  I will begin daily readings of Little House in the Big Woods starting the first week in January.  I usually read through the first few books in this series because the children enjoy it so much. We also will be doing more reading and wordwork activities as part of the daily five method.

We will begin something new this month:  COMPUTER CLASS!  On alternating Fridays, KN will be traveling upstairs to work with Mrs. Litch in the computer lab.

Just a reminder that I will be reassessing students over the coming weeks because report cards will be going home at the end of the month.

With so many great things happening, this month will be very busy and full of excitement.  Laughing
