Kindergarten - Miss Narkis

Welcome to Kindergarten! If you have any questions or concerns, please send me in a note with your child.

I have been part of the teaching staff here at St. Chris for over 15 years and love it. I also taught for 10 years in the public school prior to coming to St. Chris. My whole career has focused on the early childhood years. I find that kindergarten is a challenging but very fun level to teach and at St. Chris I’m pleased to be able to include a spiritual component to my teaching.

Mrs. Irene Foran is the Kindergarten aide for Miss Narkis.

Classroom News for May-June 2018

Beach-clipart-free-clipart-images-clipartcow-4It is the beautiful month of May, and we only have six more weeks of school remaining!  We will be very busy during this time with many exciting events taking place.  May is the month of our blessed mother Mary, so we will be learning about what makes her special.  We also will be participating in the upcoming May crowning ceremony at church.

Our final unit of the year will be the ocean!  This is always a favorite with the children, and it will give them exposure to everything from seashells to sharks!  I have a great shell collection which I will be sharing with the class in a couple of weeks.

In the area of math we will be covering our final chapter on time and money.  We will learn to tell time by the hour using both analog and digital clocks.  The children are doing quite well with money and counting mixed change.

Virtue is our last character trait for the year, which nicely ties together everything that we have learned thus far.  Virtue involves making good, moral choices in order to live a clean, healthy and holy life.  It should be the basis of all that we do.

There are many things going on this month, so please be sure to read the Wednesday news for dates and times, or check out the website for all needed information.

* June 8th is our last day of kindergarten.  We will be having a class beach party, and then later that morning, all parents are invited to come watch our little surprise performance.  Please mark your calendars for FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 11:30am.  There is NO AFTERCARE and the children will be dismissed at the end of our performance which will be around noon.  Please plan accordingly.

I can't believe how fast the year is wrapping up, however we still have lots of great things to experience before it all ends.  I'm looking forward to seeing you throughout the coming weeks.  Cool

Class News April 2018

easter-clip-art-easter-religious-graphics-holy-easter-clipart-leLdu1-clipartWe have been focusing on the passion of Jesus through the Lenten season and now it is time to celebrate the joy of the resurrection and new life! HAPPY EASTER! It seems like Spring has finally arrived as plants are coming up in the school gardens and things are warming up.

This month will be short and go by quickly, due to our upcoming vacation, however we still have lots to cover in the weeks ahead.  We will finish up with the alphabet this month, so it will be time to move into word families next.  We are doing quite a bit of phonetic spelling and sentence writing using our high frequency words.  The children are doing well in applying their skills.  They are excited that I can actually read their writing and journal entries.

This month's character trait is sincerity which means that we should have transparent motives in all that we do.  We will be discussing the difference between being genuine and being fake, or doing things for selfish gain.

Soon we will begin our money unit in math.  This will invovle identifying pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and learning the values of each.  This is where all our base counting practice will pay off.  The children have had some practice already with quarters as they purchase snacks and popcorn.  We will have fun playing store and purchasing items.

I am looking forward to our new unit on honey bees.  As an assistant bee keeper, I have some knowledge and firsthand experience dealing with bees and I love sharing it all with the children.  There is a lot to learn about these sweet, little insects and I have some great activities planned that I know the children will love.

Hopefully April will end with a warm, sunny vacation week for all to enjoy! Smile

Class News March 2018

Believe it or not, Spring will be here in just a few weeks.  It is such a hopeful time of year, full of new life and growth.  The children have grown so much since September and I continue to enjoy watching them progress.

The week that we return from February break will include our STEM day.  The children worked in small groups to meet an engineering objective and together, they accomplished the task!  Come to our STEM night on Thursday and see what our class project involved.  It was a lot of fun, and I was impressed with the final outcome.

We will continue our observance of the season of Lent through class lessons as well as attending Stations of the Cross each Friday afternoon.  This is a way for all of us to remember the sacrificial love of Jesus, and spend some time reflecting on His precious gift of salvation to all who believe.

Forgiveness is this month's character trait which is ultimately demonstrated by Jesus on the cross, at which time, He asked forgiveness for those who were killing Him.  We have numerous opportunities in life to exercise forgiveness, and the children are very good about forgiving each other at school.

We will be finishing the alphabet letters of the week soon.  The children will continue to write sentences, engage in wordwork activities, practice spelling HFW and apply phonics to spelling in their journals.

Our new unit on rocks and minerals will be lots of fun as the children will learn about the three basic categories of rocks and get their hands on some real gems!  Children seem to naturally enjoy collecting and examining rocks, so I expect that they will enjoy the activities that I have planned for them.

We will end this month with Holy Week and Mrs. foran and I would like to wish you all a very blessed and happy Easter!
