Welcome to Kindergarten! If you have any questions or concerns, please send me in a note with your child.

I have been part of the teaching staff here at St. Chris for 11 years and love it. I also taught for 10 years in the public school prior to coming to St. Chris. My whole career has focused on the early childhood years. I find that kindergarten is a challenging but very fun level to teach and at St. Chris I’m pleased to be able to include a spiritual component to my teaching.

Class News March 2010

For_webThis month we will end our unit on the Solar System by creating our own model of the sun and planets to suspend from the classroom ceiling.  The children will work with a partner to paint their assigned planets.  A rocket launch is scheduled for tomorrow morning which everyone is excited about.  We have two pop rockets which are fueled by a combination of Alkerseltzer and H2O.  It will be interesting to see which one will go the highest!for_web_2

In just a couple of weeks Spring will arrive and if you remember back in September our class had a swallowtail caterpillar which has been winreing over in our classroom.  We will need to keep a close eye on Sleeping Beauty to see if she will come out with the change in season.

For the season of Lent we are focusing on the character trait of forgiveness.  Jesus forgave those who persecuted and killed Him as a great example to us all.  Every Friday we have been remembering Jesus' love and sacrifice for us by attending the stations of the cross.  We look forward to Holy Week as Easter approaches and we focus on the gift of eternal life.  This focus makes a nice transition into our new unit of study which centers around living things, flowers and planting.

Happy Spring and a blessed Easter to all!

February Class News 2010

February will be a fast and full month.  We begin with celebrating Catholic Schools Week and the children are looking forward to all the fun activities that they will be participating in throughout the week.  At the end of January the children finished a very special project.  They each made their own rosary and their hard work paid off because the rosaries are beautiful!  Fr. Kelly will bless our rosaries after the school Mass on Monday.

Outer space will be the focus of this month as we begin a unit on the solar system.  We will be reading about each planet and will be working on related projects.  If all goes according to plan we will have a pop rocket launch before we wrap up this unit.

We continue to practice working with numbers beyond ten and the class is doing an excellent job with base counting.  We also have been practicing adding and subtracting through story telling and the use of manipulatives.

We are very grateful to Mrs. Popik, Mrs. Imhof, and Mr. Godlewski for their help with our February Meals on Wheels project.  I'm sure that the recipients will appreciate the messages of love that we sent them.

Our Valentine's Day party will be on Friday, Feb. 12th.  Please remember to refrain from addressing valentines and goody bags to allow for a quicker distribution process.

This month will close with a week of vacation which we all will enjoy!

Class News January 2010

Happy New Year!  We are all well rested from our Christmas break and we are ready to begin this month with a unit on Arctic life.  We will be learning about the Inuit people, Balto the famous sled dog and many of the various animals who live in the colder climates.

In the area of math we continue to practice base counting by 2's,5's and 10's.  We are focusing on numbers 1-20 through counting, comparing and sequencing.  Through different games we are also becoming more familiar with the =,-, and + symbols and what each one means.

It is hard to believe but we are already beginning the second half of the alphabet!  We continue to review and practice our phonics daily and we are also trying to apply what we learn to our journal writing.

Throughout the coming weeks a great deal of time will be spent on assessments to prepare for report cards which will be issued toward the end of this month.  Please remember to sign the report cards and return them to school once you have reviewed them.  The report cards will be issued again at the end of the fourth quarter at which time you may keep them.

The children have been so excited about our character animal friends and they can't wait to meet our next one.  The character trait for January is gratefulness.
