5V May News

I can't believe May is here! The students have been working so hard and it has truly shown with all of the amazing work they have created! May is going to be another busy and fantastic month! Here is a look at what is happening:

English- The 5th grade students will now be focusing on Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections.  They will not only further their understanding of these parts of speech but also learn how to use these parts of speech correctly in sentences. In writing, the students have done an excellent job with their rough drafts for their Tall Tales. The students will be peer editing and finishing up their final copy! Once we have completed our Tall Tale stories, we will be moving right into our Persuasive Writing unit. We will also continue to learn new vocabulary words and incorporate these into our writing.

The 6th grade students will be focusing on Subjects and Predicates as well as Simple, Compund, and Complex sentences. They will also further their understanding of Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections. For writing we will continue to focus on our Persuasive writing unit. The students did a tremendous job with our classroom debate and now the students will select their own topic and write a persuasive essay. We will also continue to learn new Vocabulary words using our Vocabulary Workshop workbooks.

Spelling- This month we will be working on the Review for Lessons 21-25, as well as covering Lesson 26, Lesson 27, Lesson 28, and Lesson 29. I continue to encourage the students to use Spellingcity.com to review spelling words and prepare for weekly Spelling tests! It is also important to understand the meanings of these words as well!

Reading- Our final Book Report theme is Informational Reading. For this book report, the students will be creating a board game based on the information they learned from their book. The students will receive the directions the first week of May! It will be due on May 31, 2017.

Religion- This month we will be learning about the sacraments of Matrimony and Holy Orders as well as understanding the importance of being One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. Throughout this month we will also have our Diocesan Consecration on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, our May Crowning on Friday, May 19, 2017, and our Ascension Mass on Thursday, May 25, 2017. It would be wonderful if you could join us for these!

Have a wonderful May!
