December News in 5V

It is hard to believe that we are already in December! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had a wonderful month filled with completing our “How To” articles as well as hearing all of the great Historical Fiction book reports. Here is a look at what will be happening in December:

English- In 5th and 6th grade English the students will be learning their next chapter in grammar, which is Chapter 3: Adjectives. The students will not only further their understanding of what an adjective is but also further their learning of the role of adjectives in sentences. As we continue to learn about the different parts of speech, the students will be expected to correctly use and identify them in everything that they write. The students will also begin their next writing piece, which is creating a Christmas Story using vocabulary words from their Vocabulary Workshop workbooks. It is extremely important for the students to not only continue to build their vocabulary but also understand how to use these words in their writing.

Spelling- We will work on Lessons 11, 12, 13, and 14. The students have been doing a great job using the iPads for their spelling tests and I continue to encourage the students to use Spellingcity.com at home as a studying tool to prepare for our weekly tests.

Reading- Our book report theme this month is Poetry. The students will be read a poetry book and pick their favorite poem to use to create a poetry panel for our class “Poetry Quilt.” This project will be completed in class.

Religion- We will continue to talk about the season of Advent and Christmas as well as continuing learning about the sacraments.

Upcoming Events:

December 6, 2017- Penitential Service at 1:00

December 8, 2017- Immaculate Conception Mass at 9:15- 6E preparing

December 8, 2017- Progress Reports

December 8, 2017- The Fifth Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at 6:00

December 19, 2017- Gr 3-6 Christmas Concert at 10:00

December 20, 2017- 5V Christmas Party!

5V November News

cornucopiaOctober was such a wonderful month for learning and building our knowledge. We had a wonderful Vocation Day as well as a great Halloween celebration. The students have been working so hard and it has truly shown! Now that November is here, we are expecting another great month ahead of us! Here is a look at what to expect for November:

English- This month the 5th and 6th grade students will continue their Chapter on Pronouns and how Pronouns are used in sentences. Once we have completed this chapter, the students will then move on to further their understanding of Adjectives. In writing, the students will be completing a “How to” article where they need to provide logical, complete, and accurate step- by- step directions for completing a task. The students must be “experts” on the topic they choose so they can be confident in providing thorough directions. We are also continuing to build our vocabulary using the Vocabulary Workshop workbooks. I encourage students to incorporate the words that we have been learning about into their writing!

Spelling- This month we will be covering Lessons 8, 9, 10 and a Review week in Spelling City. I encourage students to continue to use spellingcity.com to review and study their spelling words. It is a great resource to use. The students have been doing a great job with taking the spelling tests on the iPads and we will continue to have our tests each week on the iPads.

Reading- In reading we have been working on building our vocabulary as well as furthering our understanding of using “context clues” to determine the meaning of words. This is such an important tool to use while reading any type of piece and the students have been doing a tremendous job to progress in this skill. The students have also done an excellent job with their book reports so far this year and we will continue that this month with the theme of Historical Fiction. The instructions/grading rubric has been sent home. The Book Report is due on Wednesday, November 29, 2017.

Religion- The students will continue their learning of the Sacraments of Initiation with the sacrament of Baptism as well as learn about the Liturgical Year and Advent.

Just as a reminder, Parent- Teacher Conferences are on Thursday, November 16, 2017.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Mrs. Viola Smile

5V October News

It is hard to believe that we have been in school for a month! We have had a great start to the school year and the students have been doing a great job with switching classes and remembering their supplies for each class. We have a busy month ahead of us. Here is what will be happening in October!

In English, the students have been working hard on their Personal Narratives. They have been working on including descriptive language and using their 5 senses to create a picture for their readers. We are making great progress! In grammar, the students will continue to learn and further their understanding of Nouns and their different uses (Subject, Subject Complements, Direct Objects, Indirect Objects, Object of the Prepositions, etc). The students will also begin to learn new vocabulary words using Vocabulary Workshop and they will begin to incorporate these new words in their writing. Looking ahead to our next chapters, the students will continue reviewing parts of speech specifically focusing on pronouns and their next writing piece will be a “How To” Essay.

For Spelling, we will be covering Lesson 5, our first Review Week (Lessons 1-5), and Lessons 6 and 7. I encourage the students to use spellingcity.com as a study guide and resource for learning the spelling words. We will be using the iPads for Spelling Tests so it is beneficial for the students to use spellingcity.com and become more familiar with the website!

In Reading, the students will continue to read stories from our Reading Street textbook and study the different genres associated with these stories. As we read these stories, the students will be working on fluency, reading comprehension, and learning new vocabulary. October’s Book Report theme is Mystery! Directions for this Book Report have been passed out and the due date is October 25, 2017.

In Religion we will continue to further our learning about the seven Sacraments and Holy Days. Vocation Day is on October 24, 2017. In preparation for Vocation Day, we will be discussing what Vocation Day is and what it means for us.
