5V October News

It is hard to believe that we have been in school for a month! We have had a great start to the school year and the students have been doing a great job with switching classes and remembering their supplies for each class. We have a busy month ahead of us. Here is what will be happening in October!

In English, the students have been working hard on their Personal Narratives. They have been working on including descriptive language and using their 5 senses to create a picture for their readers. We are making great progress! In grammar, the students will continue to learn and further their understanding of Nouns and their different uses (Subject, Subject Complements, Direct Objects, Indirect Objects, Object of the Prepositions, etc). The students will also begin to learn new vocabulary words using Vocabulary Workshop and they will begin to incorporate these new words in their writing. Looking ahead to our next chapters, the students will continue reviewing parts of speech specifically focusing on pronouns and their next writing piece will be a “How To” Essay.

For Spelling, we will be covering Lesson 5, our first Review Week (Lessons 1-5), and Lessons 6 and 7. I encourage the students to use spellingcity.com as a study guide and resource for learning the spelling words. We will be using the iPads for Spelling Tests so it is beneficial for the students to use spellingcity.com and become more familiar with the website!

In Reading, the students will continue to read stories from our Reading Street textbook and study the different genres associated with these stories. As we read these stories, the students will be working on fluency, reading comprehension, and learning new vocabulary. October’s Book Report theme is Mystery! Directions for this Book Report have been passed out and the due date is October 25, 2017.

In Religion we will continue to further our learning about the seven Sacraments and Holy Days. Vocation Day is on October 24, 2017. In preparation for Vocation Day, we will be discussing what Vocation Day is and what it means for us.

Here are some important dates to remember:

October 6, 2017- First Quarter Progress Reports

October 9, 2017- No School, Columbus Day

October 11, 2017- Historical Perspectives Assembly

October 13, 2017- Early Release at 12:30

October 18, 2017- Lifetouch Pictures- Picture Day!

October 24, 2017- Vocation Day

October 31, 2017- Halloween Free Dress

Welcome to 5th Grade!

Welcome back to school! I am very excited for the 2017-2018 school year! Here is an overview of what we will be doing throughout the school year!

In Reading, we will begin our school year focusing on our summer reading: Number the Stars. As a class we will be discussing characters, setting, plot, and so much more! Throughout the school year, we will also further our learning of genres by using our Reading Street series as well as completing monthly Book Reports. The theme for September's book report is animals. The students will receive the instructions the first week of school and it will be due September 27th!

Each week we will have a Spelling Test! We use SpellingCity.com so I encourage everyone to explore the website and become familiar with all of the resources that are available. It is a great studying tool!

In Religion, we will begin the year with learning about the Seven Sacraments. Throughout the school year we will also be focusing on Holy Days, and important Religious figures.

In English, we will further our learning of the different parts of Speech: Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Avderbs, Interjections, and Conjunctions. Our class will also have a strong focus on writing and learning how to compose different writing pieces such as Descriptive Essays, Narratives, Expository Essays, and Research Reports. The students will also have writing journals where they will be able to express their thoughts and feelings through writing prompts or a specific topic that is given to them. I am looking forward to a great year in English!

June News

Happy June! I can't believe that our school year is coming to an end! It has truly been such a wonderful year full of learning! As the year is wrapping up, here is a look at what we will be doing in the next week and a half!

In English, the 6th grade students learned about Persuasive Writing. We talked about the importance of looking at many different perspectives when trying to persuade a ceratin person or group. We participated in a class debate and then students used their background knowledge to crew their own Persuasive piece. For the 5th grade students, we have just begun the writing process for Persuasive writing and will continue to work on our writing pieces. Once the students have finished, they will share them with their peers! The students have done such an excellent job and this truly shows with all of the amazing writing they have done!

Throughout the school year we have learned so much academically and about ourselves. In Religion we went into depth about the 7 sacraments, in reading we have read numerous stories and had many wonderful discussions, and we have certainly learned more than a few new spelling words!

For the last day of school, 5V will be leading our Prayer Service at 9:15. It would be wonderful if you could join us!

It has truly been a wonderful year and I hope everyone has a great and safe summer!
