5V February News

January was a wonderful month for getting back into our routines and our Catholic Schools Week was an excellent way to end our month. We were able to celebrate our wonderful school and grow deeper in our faith and service to others. We were also able to end Catholic Schools Week with seeing our buddies from KN! Here is what will be happening throughout the month of February:

English- In English, the 5th and 6th grade students will begin Chapter 4: Verbs. Throughout the verbs chapter, the students will not only continue to learn about both action verbs and being verbs, but they will also learn how to use them correctly in their writing. In writing, the students will continue to create their own descriptive writing piece. Along with using their 5 senses, the students will also be asked to use descriptive adjectives and vivid verbs to create a successful writing piece. Once we finish our descriptive writing we will move on to Expository writing. We will also continue to learn new Vocabulary words using our Vocabulary Workshop workbooks.

Spelling-We will be covering Lessons 18, 19, and 20. Please continue to use Spellingcity.com to review spelling words and prepare for weekly Spelling tests.

Reading-This month we will continue to read Stone Fox. The students have enjoyed reading the story and we have had some great discussions about the story so far. I look forward to having excellent discussions and hearing the students’ thoughts on the message of this story. Our theme for our February Book Report is adventure. This will be due on February 22nd and the directions will be passed out the first full week of February.

Religion- In Religion, we will be continuing to learn about the sacrament of Eucharist as well as learning about the different kinds of prayer.

We will be exchanging Valentine cards on Tuesday, February 14th and that day will also be a Dress Down Day!

Happy February!

5V January News

I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season and a restful vacation. As another year begins, it is a great time to reflect and think about everything that we have accomplished so far this year as well as look forward to what is in store for us as we continue a great school year! Here is a look at what will be happening this month in 5V:

English: In English, the 5th and 6th grade students will be continuing their adjectives chapter. The students will further their learning of the many different types of adjectives as well as further their understanding of how they can use adjectives to enhance their writing. The students have been doing a tremendous job on their Christmas Stories using their vocabulary words. I am so proud of all their hard work! We will be completing our final drafts of these stories and then we will begin our next writing unit, which is Descriptive Writing. This is a great time for the students to not only use their 5 senses in their writing but also use their knowledge of adjectives to create a great writing piece. We will also continue to learn new vocabulary words using our Vocabulary Workshop books.

Spelling: In Spelling this month we will cover Lessons 14, 15, a review week of Lessons 11-15, and Lesson 16. I continue to encourage the students to use Spellingcity.com as a studying tool in preparation for our weekly spelling tests. It is a great resource to use! Throughout the beginning of January the students will also be participating in classroom Spelling Bees to find participants for our school Spelling Bee. There will be five students and an alternate from 5V who will join the other 5th grade class and both 6th grade classes.

Reading: For the month of January, we will be reading the chapter book Stone Fox as a class. During our reading time for the month of January, the students will have great discussions about what is happening in the story as well as make connections with our own lives to gather a stronger understanding of the important message that this story conveys. The theme for our January Book Report is Fantasy. The students will be making a book jacket for their story. This will be due January 25, 2017 and the directions will be passed out the first week of January.

Religion: In Religion the students will continue to further their learning of the 7 Sacraments as well as learning about the different types of prayer. This year our Catholic Schools Week will be Monday January 30, 2017- Friday, February 3, 2017.

5V will be preparing Mass for Friday, January 6th at 9:30 for our Mass with Bishop Christian. It would be wonderful if you could join us!

I am looking forward to a great January and a wonderful 2017!

December News in 5V

English- In 5th and 6th grade English the students will be learning their next chapter in grammar, which is Chapter 3: Adjectives. The students will not only further their understanding of what an adjective is but also further their learning of the role of adjectives in sentences. As we continue to learn about the different parts of speech, the students will be expected to correctly use and identify them in everything that they write. It is extremely important for the students to not only continue to build their vocabulary but also understand how to use these words in their writing.

Spelling- We will work on Lessons 11, 12, 13, and 14. The students have been doing a great job using the iPads for their spelling tests and I continue to encourage the students to use Spellingcity.com at home as a studying tool to prepare for our weekly tests.

Reading- Our book report theme this month is Poetry. The students will be read a poetry book and pick their favorite poem to use to create a poetry panel for our class “Poetry Quilt.” This project will be completed in class.
