Home Students Classroom Pages Grade 4 - Mrs. Donohue December in 4D

December in 4D

As we journey through the Advent season, I encourage you all to take a few moments to stop and reflect on the beauty of the season and what Christmas is all about. As I prepare for the birth of my first child, I thank God for the blessing of my St. Christopher family and the students that enter my room each day. Thank you so much for all the wonderful gifts that were sent in for Baby Donohue!  I look forward to sharing her arrival with you! I enjoyed meeting with each of you during Parent/Teacher conferences and I thank you for your continued support this year!

I am officially on materinty leave, but will be in close contact with Mrs. Barry.  If you need to get in touch with Mrs. Barry, please send her a note or e-mail Mrs. Ternan at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  She can pass any messages along to Mrs. Barry.  I will be checking my e-mail while at home, but probably not with the frequency I usually do, at least not right away! ????

The following is some information about our curriculum this month:

Math:  In Math, we will continue with the two minute timed test focusing on the specific times tables. Students should continue to practice their facts each night. During the rest of our Math class we are focusing on Multiplication problems that involve more than the basic facts.  We will be spending the first few weeks of December learning double digit multiplication.  We will then move onto division after vacation.

English:  In grammar we are a little more than half way through our Noun Unit. We will finish this unit before moving on to pronouns. In writing we will be working on creative writing with a Christmas theme. We will also write about our holiday traditions. After the holidays, we will begin learning about descriptive writing and persuasive writing.

Reading: As we continue to read different stories from different genres, we are exploring new vocabulary and are focusing on comprehension in addition to the basic story elements such as plot, character, and setting. We will continue to read TFK each week as this focuses on nonfiction reading and current events. This month we will also do some reading that relates to the specific holidays this month!

Spelling: Students continue to do very well with our spelling words in the activities and taking the tests.  I am working on having students apply that knowledge when they use these words outside of the context of a test. This month brings Units 11 (adding ed and ing), 12 (homophones), and 13 (ou sound as in shout).

Religion: We will learn more about the season of Advent and will continue to explore The Ten Commandments. This month we will talk about the third and fourth Commandments.

Social Studies: In Social Studies, we will begin learning about the Southeast Region of the United States. As always students should be studying the states and capitals and vocabulary for this region.

There are many exciting things going on the month for the Christmas Season. We will have a Christmas Party on December 19th.  The Signup Genius has already been sent out.
