Home Students Classroom Pages Grade 4 - Mrs. Donohue May in 4D

May in 4D

I can’t believe I am saying this, but we only have 32 days left of 4th grade!  April is behind us and the beautiful May weather is upon us!  We still have lots of things to do and lots of material to cover in class, so please remind your child to stay focused and work hard until the very end!  Also, please don’t forget to check those blue and purple folders for grades!

Math:  This month we will finish fractions and will move on to Geometry concepts.  In addition, we will touch on some decimal and measurement concepts.

English:  We will finish our exploration of verbs before moving onto adverbs.  We will finally write the biography about someone we know.  We will then move onto a fun project using alliteration to end the year.

Reading:  We will read more selections from our Reading Street book.  We will read a selection titled The Case of the Gasping Garbage, which is a mystery and How Tia Lola Came to Stay, which is a cute realistic fiction.  We will continue to focus on vocabulary and comprehension.

Book Report:  Students presented their Biography projects before vacation!  What a great job.  Pictures will be up soon!  We are getting ready to complete our last book report.  Students may choose a grade appropriate book that is a minimum of 100 pages from any genre.  They will be creating a Story Cube.  This will be distributed the week of May 1st.  The book report will be due no later than June 2nd but can be handed in any time before that!

Spelling:  We begin after vacation with the review of Units 20-25 before moving onto the last 5 Units in Spelling.  These units consist of the following spelling patterns:  Schwa Sound, Prefixes, Suffixes, and Silent Consonants.

Religion:  We have finished reading about the 10 Commandments.  We will now be reading about ways to apply these Commandments to our daily lives.  We will also talk more in depth about the Rosary.  On May 16th, we will attend a diocesan wide consecration in Manchester.  4D will be preparing the school Mass that will take place on June 2nd at 9:!5.  Please join us at church if you can!

Social Studies:  We will finish our regions unit this month and will finish the year talking about all things New Hampshire.  Students should be reviewing their states and capitals from all the regions.  We will be having the first 50/50 Test on Friday, May 15, 2015.  Students will work to become members of the 50/50 club by being able to name all 50 capitals and being able to label the 50 states on a map!  A practice packet will be available in my classroom for anyone who would like it.  Everyone will attempt to become members of the 50/50 club and should try their best.
