Home Students Classroom Pages Grade 4 - Mrs. Donohue Spring is in the Air

Spring is in the Air

Spring is in the air!  It is April already and the beginning of 4th quarter.  Where has the time gone?  Last month proved to be quite busy!  We finished off many units, had Terra Nova testing, presented the Station of the Cross, and enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day.  We also started FitKids!  Phew!  I am exhausted just thinking about it!  The students in 4D did a wonderful job with the Stations, especially without a microphone!  They also worked hard during Terra Nova!  We have a lot more to do during the month of April so please remind your child to use their best listening skills in class and to put their best effort in each day!   As always, thank you for your continued support!

Here is a look at what is going on this month!

Math:  In math this month we will continue our exploration of Fractions.  We will be adding and subtracting like and unlike dominators.  We will continue to simplify and will work with improper fractions.

English:  This month we will explore verbs.  We will also be reviewing how to write a proper paragraph in preparation for writing our biographies and a descriptive paragraph.  We will also be writing our own poems for the poetry slam.

Reading:  We are continuing our exploration of Biographies.  We have spent some class time working on their Biography project.  In addition, we have been reading about other important people like Pope John Paul II.

Book Report:  This month, we are working on our Biography Project.  Students needed to choose a biography to read and they will be exploring the life of the person they are reading about in great detail!  We will work on this project in class but students should also work at home reading the book and filling in parts of the packet.  I will be checking in with students every few days to see how the project is progressing.  At the end of the project, students will be presenting information about that person to their classmates in the form of a prepared oral presentation.  They will need a costume for this presentation!  The rest of the project should be done before the presentation on April 13.

Spelling:  Students continue to do very well with our spelling words in the activities and taking the tests.  I continue to work on having students apply that knowledge when they use these words outside of the context of a test.

Religion:  This month we will focus on the ninth and tenth commandment and will finish our study of the Stations of the Cross with a test on April 7th.

Social Studies:  We have begun our study of the Southwest region of the United States.  Students should continue to study their states and capitals and the vocabulary for the chapter.  We will explore the West region next.  At the end of the Regions unit, students will work to become members of the 50/50 club by being able to name all 50 capitals and being able to label the 50 states on a map!  They should start reviewing the previous regions’ capitals to be ready for this!
