3rd Grade February Book Report

3rd Grade February Book Report

Due Tuesday, February 16, 2016 (Before Vacation)

Celebrating Black History Month

February is Black History Month and a remembrance to the important people and events in African American History. We have included a list of famous African Americans for you to choose from. You may be reading about a Civil Rights Leader, Educator, Government Official, Inventor, Athlete, Musician, or Astronaut.

This book report is called “Dear Diary” and you will be writing as if you are the character. You are to design a diary or journal.  After reading your book, write at least 7 entries that might have been written by the character. Remember, in a diary or journal you are writing with feeling and emotion of the events that are taking place – good or bad. Please provide plenty of details about these events. You certainly may include pictures throughout your diary or journal. Be creative with this and really put yourself in the character’s shoes – become this person as you are writing and think about what feelings and thoughts you would have if this was you.

Please make sure you include the title and author of your book(s). Have fun with this and maybe you will learn a little about yourself along the way!

Langston Hughes . Duke Ellington . Willie Mays . Hank Aaron . George Washington Carver . Muhammad Ali . Wilma Rudolph . Maya Angelou . Martin Luther King Jr. . Coretta Scott King . Rosa Parks . BB King . Harriet Tubman . Shirley Chisolm . Thurgood Marshall . Douglas Wilder . Jackie Robinson . Clara Brown . Booker T. Washington . Frederick Douglass . Sojourner Truth . Mae Jemison

January News

Happy New Year 2016!

It will be great to see everyone back and excited.  I hope everyone enjoyed their vacations with families and friends.

January is full of fun things, and I believe the students are up to the challenge!

Math:  Division and multiplication are the themes this month.  We will look at how division and multiplication are related.  To reinforce basic skills, we will practice fact families, have timed quizzes, and play math games.  Please remember to visit IXL.com and multiplication.com for fun practice at home.

Religion:  We will learn more about The Apostle's Creed and how the Church continues to teach the true message of Jesus.  Research of our classroom saint will happen during Catholic School's Week.

Social Studies:  Both third grades will study location, climate, and natural resources and how those affect people.  We will "travel" to Montana, Alaska, Hawaii, and Texas and compare and contrast different regions.

Language Arts:  Our focus will be on suffixes, action verbs, tenses of verbs, subject-verb agreement, and irregular verbs.  Adjectives are coming soon!  We are trying to make our journal writing more descriptive and interesting.  Our next book report will center around Black History Month and is due mid-February.  Details are coming soon.

Please feel free to come to me with any questions or concerns you may have.

December News

3G has a lot planned for this month!  It is sure to keep us busy as we look forward to Christmas vacation. We have shopping for kids, our Christmas concert, Immaculate Conception Mass, Christmas tree lighting, and a book report due!

In Math, we are beginning multiplication.  The class has been looking forward to this and we will review the basic facts daily in class.  Please continue to do this at home.  Pop quizzes can happen at any time!  Another website that is great practice and a lot of fun is www.multiplication.com.  This site offers a variety of games at different levels.

in Religion, we are learning about Catholic Social Teaching and ways we can help others during this holiday season as we prepare for Christmas.  Our hallway bulletin board shows the class work in celebration of Advent.

In Language Arts, we are practicing our oral reading and comprehension, vocabulary, contractions, homophones, writing with proper grammar, and drawing conclusions. Spelling City is another great resource to review those weekly spelling words.

In Social Studies, we will be continuing to look at holiday celebrations around the world and how they are celebrated across different cultures. It's interesting to compare and contrast different celebrations with our own.

3G will have our Christmas celebration on Friday December 18.

3G wishes you and your family a peaceful and very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
