September News

Happy September!

Wow! Our first few days of school have been fabulous and the class is quickly adjusting to being back in the school routine. I am adjusting to 2nd grade as well :)

Below is the Special schedule.

Monday – PE- don’t forget your gym uniform!

Tuesday – Computer/Library

Wednesday – Music and Spanish

Thursday - Art

Becoming more responsible

One of our goals in second is to become responsible citizens. There are many ways we learn to do this. One way is to keep track of their own homework. Second graders are now responsible for keeping a Student Planner. They are in charge of writing their homework in it each day. They need to bring their Student Planner and HOME folder home with them each afternoon and then bring it back the very next day. Friday folders will be sent home on Fridays. Please sign and return on Monday.

Math

We will start our math curriculum with a basic review od 1st grade skills, then quickly move on to new skills. Students are expected to use IXL and Xtramath at home often. There will be timed tests each week on basic math facts. Xtramath is a great resource to improve on speed and automaticity. A letter went home with an access code for Xtramath. Even if your child used Xtramath last year, please log in with the access code highlighted on your letter, this will link your child's account to my class account so I can see how he/she is doing.

Language Arts

The month of September will be spent setting the daily routines and expectations in our classroom. Students are learning the Daily 5 routines and quickly building their stamina in both reading and writing. We are currently working on "Read to Self" and "Work on Writing." Our next Daily 5 choice will be "Read to Someone," We will also begin working on word work. I am very impressed with everyone’s writing and I enjoyed reading about their “super summer”

Our FIRST spelling test of the year will be Friday, September 15th. This spelling test is a sight word review. Spelling lists go home every week with a list of activities that need to be completed everyday.

Religion

We started our first chapter in religion which is focusing on of the life of Jesus. Students will contune to learn about all the wonderful things Jesus has done for us!
