Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful, restful Christmas break with your families. Now onto a new year filled with new learning experiences in 2nd grade!

Here is what we will be focusing on this month!

Math:    In Math we will continue to learn about different types of graphs. We will learn how to collect and analyze data. We will continue to review pictographs, bar graphs, line plots, and surveys. We will also continue to practice range, mode, and median. This month we have moved on to subtraction for our timed math practice! Please make sure to practice this at home! Xtra math and IXL is the best way to practice these skills.

Reading:  This month we will improve our reading comprehension by practicing some new strategies and reviewing previously thought ones.  We will review author’s purpose by looking at different texts and deciding if the author chose to write to entertain, inform, or persuade. The new strategy we will focus on is “drawing Conclusions.” We will look at various stories and make inferences.  We will also continue to work on our phonics skills by learn about the phonics patters ee ea y and o oa ow.

Religion:  This month our focus will be learning about the Bible. We will read stories from the Old and New Testament and talk about what the Bible can teach us. We will begin to discuss the laws God gave us called the Commandments. At the end of the month we will celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a week filled with fun and faith!

Science: We have been having a blast during our science unit on weather. We talked about the different seasons and each type of weather they bring. We spent time doing many hands on activities to learn about the water cycle! This month we will end this science unit by talking about EXTREME WEATHER!

Handwriting:  We will be starting cursive this month! The class is very excited!

Happy New Year!

Love, Mrs. Rankins

November was another busy month in 2nd grade filled with wonderful activities! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, and you enjoyed time with your families. Wow! I can’t believe there is less than 4 weeks until Christmas! This is always a very busy time of year, but we still need to remember the true meaning of Christmas. This month we will be having a lot of holiday celebrations and activities and I am sure the class is going to be very excited! December is a very important month for second graders and we will continue to learn and grow as a class Here are some topics we will cover this month:

Religion: Our class will be leading the Christmas Prayer Service on December 21st with our buddies! We have been working hard putting the service together and practicing our reading. We hope to see you all there!

We will learn more about the season of Advent. This is a time that we wait and prepare for Jesus Christ.  Additionally, we will continue to talk about Christmas, the season to give glory to God.

Reading: In reading this month we will focus on three comprehension strategies:

These skills will be practiced daily when we read in our Reading Street and when students work in small groups during the Daily 5. Fluency is another skill be will focus on. The class is learning to read with “expression’! And to “not read like a robot”! Please continue to read every night for 15min. and do not forget to record your books in your reading logs!

English: We are still working on nouns in English. Our focus this month is on plural nouns, irregular plural nouns, and possessive nouns.

Spelling/Phonics: We will focus on 3 spelling patterns this month: r-controlled vowels, plurals, and long “a” vowel patterns: a, ai, ay. Please check spelling city for our spelling words!

In December we will move on to Chapter 3, where students will learn to read, interpret, and create graphs, collect data, and determine range, median, and mode. We will continue to work on our problem solving skills as well.

November News

Wow! October was a busy month in 2R!cornucopia120907

In Religion we started the month by learning about the 7 sacraments. The class is doing a great job with their Religion tests. Don’t forget to study! This month we created pumpkins for our hall bulletin board and wrote a descriptive paragraph about our pumpkins. The class is doing a wonderful job with their writing.  We did many Halloween themed activities this month. We sorted Halloween sentences into the 4 types of sentences: Declarative, Imperative, Interrogative, and Exclamatory. And used candy corn to compare numbers. We had a wonderful Halloween party! Thank you Mrs. Costa and Mr.Cyran for planning and leading a craft!  We finished our Social Studies unit on Where People Live by completing a country project! Each student was given a country they needed to research. I was very excited to read about all the different countries the class learned about!  We will now be moving onto our first unit in Science.

November is a short, but busy month! Here is what we have planned in 2nd grade.

Math: In math this month, we will be starting Chapter 2: place value. We will be identifying the values of digits in two-digit numbers, writing number words up to 100, comparing and ordering numbers up to 100, and problem solving. We will also be practicing our estimation skills. We will continue to do Minute Math – a daily timed math fact quiz. Students should be practicing their math facts daily on www.xtramath.org, they should also be practicing math skills on www.ixl.com a couple times a week.

Religion: In Religion we will be talking about how the church celebrates different seasons of the Church Year. We will also learn about Ordinary Time, when we celebrate Jesus Christ and learn to follow him.

Science: We have moved onto our first Science unit, Weather and Seasons! We are all very excited to learn about this topic! We will be spending a lot of time reading, writing, and watching video clips about weather. We will talk, how weather changes from season to season, and finally extreme weather!

Reading: In Reading, we will learn a few more comprehension strategies including cause and effect, Author’s purpose, and facts and details. Students should be practicing these strategies at home while they are reading 15 minutes a day. We will also continue building our fluency and reading rate. The class loves Daily 5 and enjoys making their Daily 5 choices throughout the week.

Spelling/Phonics: The spelling patterns we will work on this month are: r-controlled vowels and contractions. Keep practicing those spelling words on http://www.spellingcity.com/NicoleJacques/. (we have one account for 2nd grade)

English: In English we will talk about nouns; common nouns, Proper Nouns, and singular/plural nouns.
