febJanuary has come to an end and February is here! I cannot believe how quickly our time has flown. I guess time flies when you are having fun! January was another wonderful month in 2nd grade. I am so impressed with how hard the students are working!

February is a short but busy month in 2nd grade. Here are some of the things we will be focused on this month.

Math: In January we finished our chapter on graphing and data. This month we will work on Chapter 4: This chapter focuses on double digit addition with and without regrouping. We will complete many hands on activities to help us understand regrouping. We have begun our timed subtraction facts. Please make sure you log on to www.xtramath.org each week to practice these skills.

Reading: This month we will continue to strengthen our comprehension skills. The skills we will be working on are drawing conclusion, comparing/contrasting and sequencing. We will read many stories together in class to practice these skills. Fluency is another skill we will continue to improve. The class has done a great job in their reading groups and many have increased their words per minute!  Keep reading at home!

Spelling/Phonics: The spelling patterns this month will be long vowel patterns i, ie, igh, y and comparative endings “er” and “est”

English: VERBS VERBS VERBS!

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful, restful Christmas break with your families. Now onto a new year filled with new learning experiences in 2nd grade!

Here is what we will be focusing on this month!

Math:    In Math we will continue to learn about different types of graphs. We will learn how to collect and analyze data. We will continue to review pictographs, bar graphs, line plots, and surveys. We will also continue to practice range, mode, and median. This month we have moved on to subtraction for our timed math practice! Please make sure to practice this at home! Xtra math and IXL is the best way to practice these skills.

Reading:  This month we will improve our reading comprehension by practicing some new strategies and reviewing previously thought ones.  We will review author’s purpose by looking at different texts and deciding if the author chose to write to entertain, inform, or persuade. The new strategy we will focus on is “drawing Conclusions.” We will look at various stories and make inferences.  We will also continue to work on our phonics skills by learn about the phonics patters ee ea y and o oa ow.

Religion:  This month our focus will be learning about the Bible. We will read stories from the Old and New Testament and talk about what the Bible can teach us. We will begin to discuss the laws God gave us called the Commandments. At the end of the month we will celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a week filled with fun and faith!

Science: We have been having a blast during our science unit on weather. We talked about the different seasons and each type of weather they bring. We spent time doing many hands on activities to learn about the water cycle! This month we will end this science unit by talking about EXTREME WEATHER!

Handwriting:  We will be starting cursive this month! The class is very excited!

Happy New Year!

Love, Mrs. Rankins

Happy December

Dear Families, 6358486707913274031048167474_december-month-snowmen

November was another busy month in 2nd grade filled with wonderful activities! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, and you enjoyed time with your families. Wow! I can’t believe there is less than 4 weeks until Christmas! This is always a very busy time of year, but we still need to remember the true meaning of Christmas. This month we will be having a lot of holiday celebrations and activities and I am sure the class is going to be very excited! December is a very important month for second graders and we will continue to learn and grow as a class Here are some topics we will cover this month:

Religion: Our class will be leading the Christmas Prayer Service on December 21st with our buddies! We have been working hard putting the service together and practicing our reading. We hope to see you all there!

We will learn more about the season of Advent. This is a time that we wait and prepare for Jesus Christ.  Additionally, we will continue to talk about Christmas, the season to give glory to God.

Reading: In reading this month we will focus on three comprehension strategies:

Fact/detail,

Cause/effect,

comparing/contrasting.

These skills will be practiced daily when we read in our Reading Street and when students work in small groups during the Daily 5. Fluency is another skill be will focus on. The class is learning to read with “expression’! And to “not read like a robot”! Please continue to read every night for 15min. and do not forget to record your books in your reading logs!

English: We are still working on nouns in English. Our focus this month is on plural nouns, irregular plural nouns, and possessive nouns.

Spelling/Phonics: We will focus on 3 spelling patterns this month: r-controlled vowels, plurals, and long “a” vowel patterns: a, ai, ay. Please check spelling city for our spelling words!

Math: We finished Chapter 2 in November. The class worked hard leaning about place value and counting patterns. We even solved a 100’s chart challenge riddle! In December we will move on to Chapter 3, where students will learn to read, interpret, and create graphs, collect data, and determine range, median, and mode. We will continue to work on our problem solving skills as well.

Science: We will continue our Weather unit in Science. We have talked about seasons and patterns in weather. Next up, extreme weather!
