Amazing April Agenda

April

The roofs are shining from the rain,
The sparrows twitter as they fly,
And with a windy April grace
The little clouds go by.

Yet the backyards are bare and brown
With only one unchanging tree--
I could not be so sure of Spring
Save that it sings in me.

March was a busy month! We had our annual STEM Day and Science Fair, which were both big successes. Thank you for coming to check out 2J's Science Projects. We had a challenging, but fun time creating our index card towers! 2J and 2R ran the St. Patrick’s Day mass on March 16th and everyone did a fabulous job! The 2nd graders also completed their take-home “Mystery Island Landform Projects.” I can’t wait to hear all about them after Easter break! We welcome April with open arms and look forward to the warmer weather and no more snow days!

We will learn many things in 2nd grade this very short month, below is a quick outline of some of the exciting topics our class will cover…

Religion – We will begin Unit 3 in our Religion anthology. In this unit we will learn about Mass and the celebration of the Eucharist.

Math – We will finish up our unit on Double Digit Subtraction – with and without regrouping. Our next unit will be on time and money. If you want to get a head start on these skills at home, IXL is great! And don’t forget to keep practicing those math facts too! www.xtramath.org

Reading – The comprehension strategies that we will practice this month are plot and theme, fact and opinion, and cause and effect. These strategies can be practiced and discussed at home during your child’s nightly reading.

Reading Logs – Reminder: Reading logs are due at the end of each month. These reading logs should include the amount of time your child reads each night and a parent signature.  2nd graders are expected to read 15 minutes or more a night, this means they should be reading a total of 400+ minutes every month!

Spelling/Phonics – Our spelling words this month will focus on vowel digraphs (oo, ue, ew, ui), suffixes (-ly, -ful, -er, -or, -ish), and prefixes (un-, re-, pre-, dis-).

English – This month we will talking about adverbs. Good writers use adjectives and adverbs to make their writing more interesting! We will also start learning about pronouns.
