Outstanding October!

An Autumn Day!

Pumpkins in the cornfield,
Gold among the brown,
Leaves of rust and scarlet
Trembling slowly down;
Birds that travel southward,
Lovely time to play;
Nothing is as pleasant
As an autumn day!

Wow! I can’t believe how fast September has flown by! We have covered a lot in a few short weeks. We have learned about The Daily 5 and CAFÉ. Through this system, we have been building our reading and writing stamina by practicing “Read to Self,” “Read to Someone,” “Work on Writing,” and “Word Work.” In Religion, we have learned about the Blessed Trinity, the Holy Family, and several special Catholic celebrations, like Pentecost. In Math, we have been practicing both addition and subtraction math facts and problem solving. We have been taking 3-minute timed math tests and have been beating our scores each day! In Social Studies we have just started talking about the different types of communities in which people live: urban, rural, and suburban.

October brings in a new season and more learning! Check out some of the things we will be learning this month in 2J:

ReadingWe will continue our Unit on “How can we explore new places and things?” We will be focusing on a few important comprehension strategies: Character/Setting, Main Idea, and Fact and Details. We will also talk about building our oral reading fluency, working on our expression and intonation. Students should be reading 15 minutes each night. Remember: the only way to get better at reading is to read !

SpellingOur spelling patterns will include long vowels, consonant blends, inflected endings and consonant digraphs! We will also have a high-frequency word review week, so keep practicing those words on spellingcity.com (link: https://www.spellingcity.com/NicoleJacques/)

ReligionIn Religion, we will focus on the sacraments and the different ways we worship God.

EnglishWe are currently working on sentences. This month we will learn about subjects and predicates, as well as the different kinds of sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. Practicing these skills on IXL will be very beneficial!!

Social StudiesWe will continue our unit on where people live. We will learn how to use a map key and a compass rose. We will also read about states, countries, continents, and oceans.

And finally, MathWe will finish up our unit on addition and subtraction facts and then move on to place-value. It’s extremely important that each student practices their math facts every day. These should be automatic (no fingers)! Please let your child use Xtramath.org in order to improve their speed and accuracy.
