Welcome to Second Grade!!

My name is Nicole Jacques and this is my 5th year teaching 2nd grade at St. Christopher School. I graduated from Keene State College in 2009 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education and Sociology. I earned my M.Ed in Literacy and Language Learning from Lesley University and am currently working towards a Reading Specialist license.  Prior to working at St. Chris, I worked in the Salem public school district as a Title I Reading Teacher. Dashing Through December

Someone painted pictures on my

Windowpane last night –

Willow trees with trailing boughs

And flowers, frosty white,

And lovely crystal butterflies;

But when the morning sun

Touched them with its gold beams,

They vanished one by one.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, filled with lots of relaxation and family time. It’s hard to believe there is less than 4 weeks until Christmas! Another holiday season is flying by! There will be a lot of holiday celebrations and activities this month, but we will continue learning and growing as 2nd graders. Here are some topics we will cover this month:

Religion: We will learn that Advent is the season of waiting and preparing for our savior, Jesus Christ. We will also talk about Christmas, the season to give glory to God.

Reading: In reading this month we will focus on three comprehension skills: fact/detail, cause/effect, and comparing/contrasting. We will practice these skills as we read our anthology and as we continue to participate in the Daily 5. We will also focus on our reading fluency by practicing reading with expression. Your child can practice reading with expression at home by reading to the family or even a bedroom of stuffed animals. The more they read out loud, the more fluent they will become. Remember to read 15 minutes each night!

English: We are still working on nouns in English. Our focus this month is on plural nouns, irregular plural nouns, and possessive nouns.

Spelling/Phonics: We will focus on 3 spelling patterns this month: r-controlled vowels, plurals, and long “a” vowel patterns: a, ai, ay.

Math: We will be finishing up Chapter 2 on place value and counting patterns. Then we will move on to Chapter 3, where students will learn to read, interpret, and create graphs, collect data, and determine range, median, and mode. We will continue to work on our problem solving skills as well.

Science: We will continue our Weather unit in Science. We have talked about seasons and patterns in weather. Next up, extreme weather!

November News!

The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest is all gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.

Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields, their yellow grain.
So open wide the doorway-
Thanksgiving comes again!

October was a fun month full of activities! We learned about the 7 sacraments. We made Frankensteins for the hall bulletin board and did a witch craft at our Halloween party. We sorted sentences into the 4 types of sentences: Declarative, Imperative, Interrogative, and Exclamatory. We finished our Social Studies unit on Where People Live and completed our first take-home project: Countries!

November is here! This is a short, but busy month! Take a look at what we have planned in 2J this month:

Math: In math this month, we will be working on Chapter 2: place value. We will be identifying the values of digits in two-digit numbers, writing number words up to 100, comparing and ordering numbers up to 100, and problem solving. We will also be practicing our estimation skills. We will continue to do Minute Math – a daily timed math fact quiz. Students should be practicing their math facts daily on www.xtramath.org, they should also be practicing math skills on www.ixl.com a couple times a week.

Religion: In Religion we will be talking about how the church celebrates different seasons of the Church Year. We will also learn more in depth about Ordinary Time, when we celebrate Jesus Christ and learn to follow him.

Science: 2J has moved onto our first Science unit, Weather and Seasons! We are all very excited to learn about this topic! We will be spending a lot of time reading, writing, and watching video clips about weather. We will talk about the patterns found in weather, how weather changes from season to season, and finally extreme weather! (Think: tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, etc)

Reading: In Reading, we will learn a few more comprehension strategies including cause and effect, Author’s purpose, and facts and details. Students should be practicing these strategies at home while they are reading 15 minutes a day. We will also continue building our fluency and reading rate. The class loves Daily 5 and enjoys making their Daily 5 choices throughout the week.

Spelling/Phonics: The spelling patterns we will work on this month are: r-controlled vowels and contractions. Keep practicing those spelling words on http://www.spellingcity.com/NicoleJacques/.

English: In English we will talk about nouns; common nouns, Proper Nouns, and singular/plural nouns.
