Welcome to Second Grade!!

My name is Nicole Jacques and this is my 5th year teaching 2nd grade at St. Christopher School. I graduated from Keene State College in 2009 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education and Sociology. I earned my M.Ed in Literacy and Language Learning from Lesley University and am currently working towards a Reading Specialist license.  Prior to working at St. Chris, I worked in the Salem public school district as a Title I Reading Teacher. In addition to teaching, I am also a part-time swim instructor.

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I love reading and being around the water.

Outstanding October!

An Autumn Day!

Pumpkins in the cornfield,
Gold among the brown,
Leaves of rust and scarlet
Trembling slowly down;
Birds that travel southward,
Lovely time to play;
Nothing is as pleasant
As an autumn day!

Wow! I can’t believe how fast September has flown by! We have covered a lot in a few short weeks. We have learned about The Daily 5 and CAFÉ. Through this system, we have been building our reading and writing stamina by practicing “Read to Self,” “Read to Someone,” “Work on Writing,” and “Word Work.” In Religion, we have learned about the Blessed Trinity, the Holy Family, and several special Catholic celebrations, like Pentecost. In Math, we have been practicing both addition and subtraction math facts and problem solving. We have been taking 3-minute timed math tests and have been beating our scores each day! In Social Studies we have just started talking about the different types of communities in which people live: urban, rural, and suburban.

October brings in a new season and more learning! Check out some of the things we will be learning this month in 2J:

ReadingWe will continue our Unit on “How can we explore new places and things?” We will be focusing on a few important comprehension strategies: Character/Setting, Main Idea, and Fact and Details. We will also talk about building our oral reading fluency, working on our expression and intonation. Students should be reading 15 minutes each night. Remember: the only way to get better at reading is to read !

SpellingOur spelling patterns will include long vowels, consonant blends, inflected endings and consonant digraphs! We will also have a high-frequency word review week, so keep practicing those words on spellingcity.com (link: https://www.spellingcity.com/NicoleJacques/)

ReligionIn Religion, we will focus on the sacraments and the different ways we worship God.

EnglishWe are currently working on sentences. This month we will learn about subjects and predicates, as well as the different kinds of sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. Practicing these skills on IXL will be very beneficial!!

Social StudiesWe will continue our unit on where people live. We will learn how to use a map key and a compass rose. We will also read about states, countries, continents, and oceans.

And finally, MathWe will finish up our unit on addition and subtraction facts and then move on to place-value. It’s extremely important that each student practices their math facts every day. These should be automatic (no fingers)! Please let your child use Xtramath.org in order to improve their speed and accuracy.

Back to School - September News

Welcome back to school!

Our first few days of school went well and your children are quickly adjusting to being back in the school routine, as am I.

Below you will find the Specials Schedule for 2J:

Monday - PE 11:40-12:20

Tuesday - Music 9:20-10:00

Wednesday - Computers/Library 1:40-3:00

Thursday - Art 9:00-10:00, Spanish 1:20-2:00

Second graders are now responsible for keeping a Student Planner. They are in charge of writing their homework in it each day. They need to bring their Student Planner and HOME folder home with them each afternoon and then bring it back the very next day.

In 2nd grade, students are expected to use IXL and Xtramath at home often. There will be timed tests each week on basic math facts. Xtramath is a great resource to improve on speed and automaticity. A letter went home with an access code for Xtramath. Even if your child used Xtramath last year, please log in with the access code highlighted on your letter, this will link your child's account to my class account so I can see how he/she is doing.

The month of September will be spent setting the daily routines and expectations in our classroom. Students are learning the Daily 5 routines and quickly building their stamina in both reading and writing. We are currently working on "Read to Self" and "Work on Writing." Our next Daily 5 choice will be "Read to Someone," which is always a big hit!

We will also be gradually introducing each subject this month, starting with Math and Religion. And, our FIRST spelling test of the year will be Friday, September 15th. This spelling test is a sight word review.

I update my class page at least once a month. Please check back for updates, topics we will cover in class each month, pictures, and congratulations. Also, feel free to email me anytime with questions or concerns.

I look forward to a great year!

~Miss Jacques~
