Welcome to First Grade! First Grade is a wonderful grade. The children are fun, creative, challenging and so eager to learn. The most rewarding part of this grade is having all the children reading and writing by the end of the year. The love of reading is the goal in my classroom! 

I have had the honor of being a First Grade teacher at St. Christopher's for over 30 years! I have had the pleasure of teaching the children of my former students! My husband and I live in Nashua and I have two adult daughters. We have two cats!

1M Jumps into January!

Happy New Year From 1M!!!

For our followers that have had a former first grader...fear not! The November turkeys will resurface in January!

Winter turkey in the snow,

Show us where you want to go!

Will you skate or ski or fly,

to a warm place until July?

Dress him up to show us how his winter will be spent right now!

AND...

RELIGION...We are studying the parts of the mass and the responses that follow each part.  Grade 1M and our buddy class 6E, are planning and will be in charge of our Catholic Schools Week Mass on Friday February 5 at 9:15. Please join us!

MATH...Subtraction and Word Problem solving is our focus. Understandiung key words in problem solving is enforced to help know if the operation is addition or subtraction.Writing the fact or drawing a picture is always required when solving these problems.  The class is expected to use IXL or ExtraMath online twice a week.

LANGUAGE ARTS...We continue using our Pearson Online Reading Program daily. Along with this we use our hardcopy anthology for daily oral reading and work in our writing practice  book to reinforce skills learned. Story Genre, Grammar and sentence structure are ongoing skills! Each week we have new Spelling words that are practiced and tested on Friday. In Phonics we are beginning Long Vowels and the rules that accompany them.

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES...Habits of winter animals, and Healthy eating and staying well will be focused upon.  We will also be learning about well known Americans who played an impact in society such as Ruby Bridges and Martin Luther King Jr.

December in 1M

December is upon us,

The air is crisp and clear.

The birth

of Baby Jesus

is very,very near!

This month...

We learn about Advent and Jesus' birth.

Subtraction is our focus in Math. We are having daily addition practice tests. The children should be using IXL.com or Xtramath.com a couple times a week to reinforce class skills!

In Language Arts...We continue with weekly spelling words, online Reading, Grammar mechanics and sentence writing! Blends are being taught in Phonics along with Short u!

In Science and Social Studies we are discussing different cultural celebrations at this time of year. Habitats and winter hibernation and migration are taught.

NOVEMBER IN 1M!!!

November is upon us,

The air is crisp and clear!

1M is making progress

towards the 2nd half of our year!

And...... for those who have had prior students in Gr 1 and remember disguising Mr. Turkey...have no fear! He will surface in a new way in JANUARY , as a family project!!

RELIGION...We continue to learn about the Church Year,ordinary time and special times of the year. We will be learning about Advent and begin preparing for Jesus' birth.

MATH.....We continue addition and Math story problems. The children should reinforce their classroom learning with Flashcards at home and using IXL or ExtraMath online. We begin 3 number addition also.

LANGUAGE ARTS...Daily reading and using our Practice workbook in our Pearson Reading Street Program continue. Reinforcement of nouns, verbs, adjectives, subject and predicate parts are practiced. Proper sentence structure is expected.  We have Spelling words that are practiced daily at school and home. Each Friday we have a Spelling and Dictation test. In Phonics we continue our short vowels and the rules that go with short vowel patterns.

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES...Discussion of The First Thanksgiving, Squanto and Veteran's Day are this months highlights! We will also discuss Hibernation and Migration!
