Welcome to First Grade! First Grade is a wonderful grade. The children are fun, creative, challenging and so eager to learn. The most rewarding part of this grade is having all the children reading and writing by the end of the year. The love of reading is the goal in my classroom! 

I have had the honor of being a First Grade teacher at St. Christopher's for over 30 years! I have had the pleasure of teaching the children of my former students! My husband and I live in Nashua and I have two adult daughters. We have two cats!

Fall is here.

The leaves are falling!

I think I hear the Great Pumpkin calling!

We have completed 5 school weeks as of October. Our routines are in place and the class knows First Grade expectations for morming routine and work habits.

So much learning continues.....

RELIGION...We are discussing Jesus and His Family and how our family compares. John the Baptist and his role in Jesus' life has been introduced.  God's neverending love is understood!

MATH...Ordinal numbers, positional words and fewer and more than are terms we are using.  Addition will be a focus in October.  Words such as Addends, equal, sum and reciprocals(flips), 2+3=5, 3+2=5 are taught. The children are to use ExtraMath.com or IXL.com to reinforce these at home.

LANGUAGE ARTS...We continue to use our online reading daily along with oral reading and comprehension skills through our writing in our practice books. We are learning short a sounds in Phonics and short vowel rules! Daily journal writing and putting our spelling words in sentences keeps our writing skills current! We know nouns,verbs and adjectives.  The class is expected to use proper upper case letters and punctuation in all writing.  Weekly Spelling words go home and we use SpellingCity.com to reinforce learning. The class should be able to read the words, understand the meaning and spell them for our weekly test.

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES...We are discussing different animal family homes and how animals live together.  Fire Prevention and Safety will be focused on also.

This week we will visit the Scholastic Book Fair with our 6E Buddies to make a wish list.  Our class will shop at our Library time on Sept. 17th!

Our Opening of School Mass is Friday, Sept. 11 at 9:15.


RELIGION... We are learning about God's Creation and living and non-living things.  Caring for Creation is being discussed and why it is important for our future.

SOCIAL STUDIES... We are talking about school rules and their importance.  We are understanding why rules and laws in society can help keep us safe!

MATH... Reviewing tallies, patterns and positional words is our topic for the beginning of school! We will be starting number and number word review, numbers before, after and inbetween and then addition.

LANGUAGE ARTS... This includes Phonics, Spelling, English and Reading and Writing.   We are reviewing beginning, final and medial consonant sounds. We will start short vowels.  This week we have Spelling words  The children will practice at home and online via SpellingCity.com.  We have a Spelling test each Friday.  We us  Pearson Reading Street at St. Christopher.  Besides working as a whole group and small groups in reading work, we use the program online each day to listen to the weekly story, learn about skills bgeing taught through songs and interactive activities.  We will begin learning about nouns and verbs in English, capitilization and punctuation marks.  Correct letter formation is expected when the class writes.  We use our journals each day and write our weekly Spelling Words in sentences.
