Grade 1 - Mrs. Moore

Marilyn Moore

Welcome to First Grade! First Grade is a wonderful grade. The children are fun, creative, challenging and so eager to learn. The most rewarding part of this grade is having all the children reading and writing by the end of the year. The love of reading is the goal in my classroom!

I have had the honor of being a First Grade teacher at St. Christopher's for over 30 years! I have had the pleasure of teaching the children of my former students! My husband, daughters and I live in Nashua. My daughters are 19 and 16. My oldest daughter will be a Sophomore at Keene State and my youngest will be a Junior at Nashua North H.S. We have two cats and a chinchilla!

MARCHing into a new month with 1M!

1M is very excited about our new ENO boards!    We have used them each day since returning from February Break and we are loving them!  The class, along with Mrs. Moore, are trying and learning many different ways to use them and it is FUN! This month we will be looking for leprechauns while we continue to learn !  In Math we continue with addition and subtraction and are learning about Mode, Range and Median of groups of numbers.  We will be telling time and counting coins.  Using our interactive white boards will be a wonderful learning tool for this!  We have begun Long Vowels in Phonics and are  reviewing short vowels.  We are reading short stories and answering comprehension questions by finding the answers in the stories.  During this season of Lent, we attend Stations of the Cross each Friday as a school family.  Grade 1 plans the Holy Thursday Para Liturgy and  we will soon begin to prepare for this.  We hope you  will join us for this rememberance during Holy Week on Thursday April 1 at 9:15!

1M February News

We begin February with Catholic Schools Week!  This will be an exciting week for our school.  On Monday 1M and our 6E buddies will do the Mass together!  Tuesday is Pajama Day and Susan Wilmore from the Nashua Public Library will come and read to us. Wednesday is Beach Day.  We will wear our shorts and t shirts and bring blankets, sunglasses and beach hats! Thursday is Movie and Popcorn Day with our 6E buddies.  Friday closes our wonderful week with our Poetry Slam! The first and second grades have collected much needed items for the Nashua Humane Society for our Catholic Schools Week service project.

This month we are concentrating on Reading Comprehension.  We are learning to find information in stories to answer questions. We are starting our Long Vowels and the rules that go with them.  Writing  creative sentences in our journals is a daily activity in our class.  We  are doing very well writing them!  Telling time and counting coins  will be coming quickly in Math!  We continue to have our weekly math Challenge with 1D to reinforce our addition and subtraction facts.

On February 8 we will be celebrating our 100th Day of School!  Each child will be bringing in a project with 100 of something on it.  We will invite all the students to see our projects.  After the 100th Day we will count down from 80 days to ...Summer Vacation!

Valentine's Day is a fun time for first grade.  We will be decorating shoe boxes for Valentine mailboxes.  We will have parent volunteers in to make a craft and share some delicious treats!

January News from 1M

Happy New Year to All!  2010 will be an exciting year in our class!  December held many fun events for us.  Our Christmas program was enjoyed by parents and friends.  1M elves sang so well and looked so cute in their elf costumes.  Please click on the Christmas program video link to see us in action! It can be found on the Home page.  We gathered with our 6E Buddies who read Christmas stories to us and then we colored Christmas pictures.  We made candy can holders and gave them to our buddies with a candy cane.  Our Buddies gave us a Christmas pencil!  The first week in February is Catholic Schools Week and  1M and 6E will be planning the Catholic Schools week mass together! This is a first for any mass and we are very excited about it!   Deacon Al visited us and read a story about Our Lady of Guadalupe and Blessed Juan Diego.  Deacon Al visits us once a month and we do look forward to him coming!  We will continue our Phonics with short e and u.  We will then learn the long vowels and the rules that go with them.  We are writing many sentences now and are trying to always use the proper upper case letters and punctuation.  We are using inventive spelling(spelling the way the words sound), except for Word Wall spelling words and short vowel words.  Subtraction is an area we will be working  with this month.  We all look forward to our Math Challenge Math Bee with 1D each Friday!  Continuing to practice addition and subtraction facts at home and school gets us ready for our Friday challenge!  Remember to go to Spelling City.com to review weekly spelling words and play some fun games with the words!
