February News

Happy Valentine's Day to My Students!

I'm happy you're my students,

I hope you can see,

I'm really glad to have you as my 1A family.

The month of February we will have a lot to learn and do!  Some of what we will be doing is:


Religion-learning how the Holy Spirit helps the church grow, that the church began on Pentacost, the apostles led and cared for the church, the role of bishops in the church, and that the pope  leads and cares for the whole church

Phonics- long a,i, o, and u short o, and i, identify and isolate medial sounds, distinguish rhyming words from non-rhyming, identify long o and u words in sentences, recognize and read long o words, and identify and count syllables in a word

Math-place values of two digit numbers, add and subtract numbers horizontally and vertically, fact families, adding three addends, using addition and subtraction to find the missing part of a number sentence, choosing appropriate strategies to solve a problem and to recognize the value of the penny, nickel, dime and quarter, to find the value of a group of coins, and identify two groups of coins that show the same value

Reading/Language Arts, - We will be working on and reviewing long and short e sounds,  nouns in sentences, High Frequency Words, segment and blend words with long e, read words in isolation and in context, we will compare and contrast two or more things in a passage, review expository text and writing, identifying topics, vowel sounds of y, sequencing, action verbs,

Social Studies/Science- The presidents, the White House, Groundhogs Day, St. Valentine, Dr. Martin Luther King, George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, sharks and their environment

Handwriting- We will continue to work on letter formation, writing sentences, stories, and opinions

The box of the year

And brings out days

That are bright and clear.

And shouts, "Come see

What I brought today!"

We are back from a nice Christmas Vacation, and I am sure we are all well rested and ready to take on the New Year!  We will be very busy as we usually are each month with activities, such as Mass with Bishop and Christian, Catholic Schools Week.

Some of what 1A will be learning this month are as follows:

Religion- We will focus on Jesus' love for us, and that he died on the cross for us,  that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his followers and how the Holy Spirit helped Jesus' followers

Math- place values, writing two digit number and number words, determine the value of a designated number, expanded form of 2digit numbers, identify and write numbers one less and one more of two digit numbers, write numbers just before, between, and just after a given two digit number and to compare 2 digit numbers using the symbols for greater than, less than and equal to.

Phonics-leanring long vowel a, i and o, reading and writing long a, i  and o words, identify and isolate medial sounds, and to discriminate between long and short vowel a, i, and o

Language Arts and Reading- reading and writing long vowel words, High Frequency Words, cause and effect, sounds of soft and hard G and C, proper nouns, author's purpose, digraphs, wh, ch, tch, special titles, sequence and contractions and the Daily 5

Handwriting- We will continue to build on our hand writing skills, by writing stories, and sentences, unscrambling words and writing them, focusing on letter formation, and sitting in our best handwriting position.

Social Studies and Science- We will read and write about Dr. Martin Luther King, our new president, polar bears and their habitats

December News





For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"  -Luke 2:11-14



This month will be filled with MANY fun and exciting activities! We will focus on Advent , as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ's first coming to us is remembered, and Christmas when the Church celebrates the birth of Jesus.

In math we will be reviewing our basic addition and subtraction facts, and learning to choose operations and a strategies to solve word problems, identifying tens as a set of 10 ones, read and write numbers and number words for decade names ten to one hundered, and estimating quantities in a set up to 60.

Reading/English/Phonics/Handwriting-We will continue to work on the main idea, details and retelling of a story.  I will introduce initial blends, short e words, interrogative sentences, identifying topics, writing short e words, short u, High Frequency Words, cause and effect, final blends and exclamatory sentences. We will also continue to work on our handwriting, writing sentences and stories in our journals.

Science and Social Studies-We will explore animals and their habitats, solar system, the human body (bones) and map skills, symbols of the country
