January opens

The box of the year

And brings out days

That are bright and clear.

And brings out days

That are cold and gray,

And shouts, "Come see

What I brought today!"

We are back from a nice Christmas Vacation, and I am sure we are all well rested and ready to take on the New Year!  We will be very busy as we usually are each month with activities, such as Mass with Bishop and Christian, Catholic Schools Week.

Some of what 1A will be learning this month are as follows:

Religion- We will focus on Jesus' love for us, and that he died on the cross for us,  that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his followers and how the Holy Spirit helped Jesus' followers

Math- place values, writing two digit number and number words, determine the value of a designated number, expanded form of 2digit numbers, identify and write numbers one less and one more of two digit numbers, write numbers just before, between, and just after a given two digit number and to compare 2 digit numbers using the symbols for greater than, less than and equal to.

Phonics-leanring long vowel a, i and o, reading and writing long a, i  and o words, identify and isolate medial sounds, and to discriminate between long and short vowel a, i, and o

Language Arts and Reading- reading and writing long vowel words, High Frequency Words, cause and effect, sounds of soft and hard G and C, proper nouns, author's purpose, digraphs, wh, ch, tch, special titles, sequence and contractions and the Daily 5

Handwriting- We will continue to build on our hand writing skills, by writing stories, and sentences, unscrambling words and writing them, focusing on letter formation, and sitting in our best handwriting position.

Social Studies and Science- We will read and write about Dr. Martin Luther King, our new president, polar bears and their habitats

For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"  -Luke 2:11-14



This month will be filled with MANY fun and exciting activities! We will focus on Advent , as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ's first coming to us is remembered, and Christmas when the Church celebrates the birth of Jesus.

In math we will be reviewing our basic addition and subtraction facts, and learning to choose operations and a strategies to solve word problems, identifying tens as a set of 10 ones, read and write numbers and number words for decade names ten to one hundered, and estimating quantities in a set up to 60.

Reading/English/Phonics/Handwriting-We will continue to work on the main idea, details and retelling of a story.  I will introduce initial blends, short e words, interrogative sentences, identifying topics, writing short e words, short u, High Frequency Words, cause and effect, final blends and exclamatory sentences. We will also continue to work on our handwriting, writing sentences and stories in our journals.

Science and Social Studies-We will explore animals and their habitats, solar system, the human body (bones) and map skills, symbols of the country

November News

Thanksgiving Day will soon be here

It comes around but once a year

If I could only have my way.

We'd have Thanksgiving every day!


November will be filled with many fun activities which include learning about the saints, getting together with our 6th grade buddies, Barnes and Noble Night, and Crazy Sock Day!


Some of what we will be learning this month :

Religion- Saints, Great Commandment, growing as a disciple of Jesus, the church year, apostles, the Lords Prayer and it's meaning,

Math- We will begin a new unit which will focus on subtraction facts, recognizing the minus (-) and equals (=) signs, subtraction sentences, identifying the difference when subtracting, add and subtract with zero, subtracting in both horizontal and vertical form, counting back using a number line, subtraction patterns, related subtraction facts, and to recognize the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Phonics-recognize and blend words with short vowel o and u,writing short vowel o and u words, read short o and u words and high frequency words in context, reviewing short vowel a, and i,

Reading/English/Handwriting- We will learn about the plot of a story, practice reading with fluency and accuracy, segment and blend words with short i, final x/ks, decode words in context and isolation, review past and present High Frequency Words, subject and predicate of the sentence, declarative  and interrogative sentences, key features of a fantasy story and short poem, initial blends,  Daily 5 read to self, read to someone and listen to reading, plurals, character and setting. In handwriting we will continue to work on letter formation, which include the letters l, x,.

Science/Social Studies- The food groups, trees in winter, Native Americans, the Wampanoags, Thanksgiving, and Pilgrims.
